Health & Safety Competent Person/Retained Health & Safety Advisor Service

Supporting Your Business, Protecting Your People, through Collaboration, to achieve Compliance

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999 requires each employer to appoint one or more ‘competent persons’ to provide advice and guidance to the company on matters of health and safety.

They must have the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to manage health and safety correctly. This could be yourself, one or more of your workers or someone from outside of your business.

You may need a competent health and safety advisor because you want to get your health and safety right and compliant in an honest way but just don’t have time to do it all yourself now, for an accreditation (CHAS, SMAS, Safe Contractor etc) or you simply need to take your health and safety to the next level.

Our Competent Person Service

Our Health and Safety Competent Person service will provide advice and support to your company on an ongoing basis giving you peace of mind that you are compliant with health and safety law and keeping your people safe at work. We do this with a risk-based package that is bespoke to your company health and safety needs. Our support can be provided either as a stand-alone service, or alternatively included free as part of our Retained Client Health and Safety Advisor Service.

There is a common theme to all our retained clients – we understand the hazards and risks that are relevant to their work activities because we work closely with them and get to understand their businesses and the challenges they face. Forming good working relationships is absolutely necessary as we could also be held liable for Health and Safety failings within their business. Clients get the best of us, because of the excellent relationship involving trust – we need to be confident of our clients’ genuine commitment to compliance and their desire to continuously improve their performance before we take them on as a retained client or serve as their ‘competent person’.

Where external Health and Safety advice is more necessary than others:

  • Your business is seeking accreditation to one of the contractor schemes such as CHAS, SMAS or Safe Contractor – they specifically ask who provides competent health and Safety advice to the business.
  • Your company has grown to an extent where health and safety is taking up too much time for one of the employees.
  • Your health and safety risks and hazards are beyond the skillset of the team in-house, and you are seeking more specialist support.
  • You want to improve your management of health and safety; look after the health and welfare of your employees; be compliant with health and safety law and have access to advice on new legislation, and what you need to do to work safely.

Our Retained Client Health and Safety service

Those businesses using our Retained Client Health & Safety Advisor Service generally subscribe to a consultancy support package that includes the full range of our services and incorporates year-round e-mail and telephone support – although there is an option to pick services as required.
